About Steve

Steve Dickson was born at Mt Morgan in June 1962. He experienced first-hand the effects of drought when his family was forced off the land while he was still a child.

Educated in Brisbane, Steve worked in various fields before becoming a small business owner in the 1980s.  He owned and operated various businesses in Brisbane and the SunshineCoast hinterland.

Steve then moved to Buderim and started his political career when elected as division 8 councillor for Maroochy Shire in 2000.  His council roles included: Chair of Town Planning, member of the Sunshine Coast Caravan Park Advisory Board and board member of Aquagen, the Caloundra/Maroochy water authority.

In September 2006, Steve successfully entered state politics as the Liberal Member for Kawana, defeating a sitting Labor minister.

On election, he was appointed Deputy Opposition Whip. Following the merger of the Queensland Liberal and National Parties to form the LNP in July 2008, Steve became Shadow Minister for Workplace and Job Security (including Employment and Industrial Relations).

Due to an electorate boundary redistribution, Steve ran as the LNP candidate for Buderim and was elected the inaugural State Member for Buderim in March 2009.

In April 2011, as part of his restructured CanDo team, Leader of the LNP Campbell Newman appointed Steve Shadow Minister for Energy and Water Utilities.

Steve has served as a member of the Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Commission committee.  He is currently a member of the parliamentary Industry, Education, Training and Industrial Relations Committee.

Steve’s family has a long history of political involvement. His grandfather and father were both councillors, with his grandfather serving for 32 years. Steve is proud that his son Christian was elected in October 2006, to fill the position of councillor vacated by Steve. Christian is currently serving as a Sunshine Coast Regional councillor.

Steve’s message

I entered politics because I wasn’t happy with how issues affecting our every day lives were being managed. I wanted to make a difference.

I consider it to be an honour and privilege to represent the people of the Buderim electorate. My first priority will always be putting the people’s interests ahead of all else.

Although I am the Member for Buderim, I also consider it my responsibility to make the Sunshine Coast and Queensland a better place to live.

I genuinely enjoy liaising with people from all walks of life and believe family and community are two of our most important assets.

If I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
